An International driving license is different from a standard driver’s license, which you must have from your home country. This document, issued by the American Automobile Association or the American Automobile Touring Alliance, allows you to drive legally in any country that accepts it. It is a multilingual document, which translates an American driver’s license into ten other languages. An IDP is accepted in over 150 countries. This is a result of a 1949 United Nations Convention agreement. Some countries will even refuse to rent cars to foreign drivers unless they have an IDL. Furthermore, most insurance companies will require foreign drivers to obtain an IDP before they can be insured. The best part is that you won’t need to take any additional driving tests in other countries once you’ve obtained an IDL. The IDL will be valid for a year after it is issued.
Once you leave the United States, it will take some time to get your international driving license, but it’s still worth the wait. You can’t go wrong with this extra form of picture identification. To get an IDP, you must be a permanent resident of the U.S. or Canada. However, you must still have your original driver’s license on hand. This is because you can only use a certified copy of the IDP while driving in another country. This allows you to drive legally and safely in that foreign country. The IDP is valid for five years from the date of issuance. You must carry your actual driver’s license with you at all times.
A valid driving license and 3 passport-size photos are also required. Some states even offer online services to obtain your international driving license.
